"Black Americans in Congress" is a website that reviews & analyzes black Americans in Congress throughout American History. In class, you are going to examine the lives of some of the participants in early Civil Rights Movement. It is arguable that the Civil Rights Movement began with the Civil War - something to think about come Thesis time...
Your Task
1. In a group of 3, you are to each select an individual from the 3 - 10 year spans of 1870-1880, 1880-1890, 1890-1900. Thus spanning the 30 year period in your group. 2. Read the biopic about your individual. Take notes on a separate piece of paper on the, a. Political Party & Party Ideals (when you can), position in office and state and length of time served in office. b. Experiences of the Member (What was it like for them in this gov't position? What opposition or alliances did this individual make? c. What were the main interests of this person? What were their concerns (and the concerns of their constituents?) 3. When you have all read through your biopics, you are to come together as a specialists group first. (as in all that read a member profile from 1870-1880 will meet, etc) and discuss their overall findings.

Class 6 1. In your specialist groups (with others who read of the same decade), you will fill out your section of the chart. THEN 2. You will be broken down into a group of 3 and briefly cite the information that you found (now you should be confident with such since you spoke with your specialist group). Fill out the chart as you listen to your fellow classmates.
After each person has spoken, you are to analyze the period as a whole (1870-1900) and the experience of Black Americans in Congress. Were there any overarching themes that you found of interest over the course of that 30 year period?
